Priory lose Rowland Cup Final to Fareham by one shot

The final was played on Saturday 23rd August at Cosham in ideal conditions for bowling, a well looked after green and continuous sunshine.

In the first early exchanges Dave Youngs rink struggled and were several shots behind, but the rink managed to claw back to 15-13 with one end to play which Fareham won one shot to finish 16-13. Dave’s rink included Steve Mead, Mike Turner and skipper for the day Roly Bloy.

Nigel Mundys rink had a very close game against a very experienced Fareham rink and throughout a seesaw game finally losing 17-14. Nigel’s rink included Blu Marriot, Josh O’Shea a new bowler this year and Arpit Patel.

Dave Knight’s rink cancelled out Dave Youngs early problems and won by 15-10. Although Dave felt that it should have been a bigger margin. Dave’s rink included the very steady Andy Chadwick, Andy Taylor and Phil Cantwell.

Richard Smalley’s rink also got off to a great start and held a healthy lead of between 5-7 shots throughout the game. However, fate conspired to take victory away from them as they dropped seven shots in the least three ends. During these three ends we had both leads lose the jack, a lucky wood from Fareham on the 17th end resulting in a four-shot swing and an agonising wood on the last end from Richard which looked on target but flicked a wood to divert it fractionally. Sadly, it was not to be, and the rink ended in a 15 all draw. Richard’s rink included Eddie Mifsud, Ben Donnelly and Martin Eggleton

All the Priory team would like to thank the wonderful support that we had today at what was a nail biting final with some great woods bowled.

We must also thank Cosham who made us very welcome and supplied some great refreshments throughout the event.

Great match enjoyed by so many spectators from both sides
